Are you or your connection having an issue, and seeing a page like this when trying to save your details to your phone? (which triggers a download of a .vcf file)

In a nutshell, the issue is with the relationship between Apple iPhones, and the inbuilt browser of Facebook or Linkedin.

We (nor anyone else) do not have a complete solution, and are reliant on these 2 companies working together to allow the download of this file.

This is what some people will see through the inbuilt browser of Facebook or Linkedin on an iPhone when clicking to save you to their contacts.

Unfortunately, on iPhones, links from Facebook or LinkedIn open with a very basic browser within either the Facebook or LinkedIn app, not the default browser (Safari or Chrome etc).

This browser has some issues and limitations

  • It doesn’t always trigger analytics
  • Some web pages don't display properly
  • It cannot save bookmarks
  • Your history is not synced with regular browser
  • But the most important one which affects this is that it cannot open multiple tabs. Sadly to download the file, we need this feature.

This is a limitation of Apple working with these apps, and nothing we can do till they update this. Android works fine, and allows these things, but apple likes to make things very tough.

The best solutions we can offer

If you want, you have a few options

1. Leave it as is, and if someone mentions this again, ask them to click the menu button in the browser, then open the page in their default browser.

2. We can add a flow to your page, so if someone clicks “save me to your contacts”, we ask if they’re on an iphone or not. If they say they are on an iPhone, we give them further instructions to open in the default browser before triggering the download. This will also ask android users a further step as well.

3. Replace the “save me to your contacts” button with another call to action you’d like them to do, like “sign up to a newsletter” or something equally important to your business.

4. Remove the “save me to your contacts” button from your digital business card

We understand that these are not perfect solutions, but we are reliant on Apple, and the apps working together to allow this feature to work.
